Sometimes we get so used to things that are always around that we forget that there was actually a time that people lived without them. Air fresheners are one of those things. Sure, we could be talking about those spray fresheners people keep in bathrooms, but of course, we’re not. We’re talking about those little car air fresheners you can find hanging from a vast majority of rear-view mirrors.
When did people start using those? When were they invented? In today’s installment of our new series “Auto Detailing Fun Facts,” we’ll dive into the fascinating history of car air fresheners.
The Start of Air Fresheners
People have been harnessing and using scents to create a pleasant aroma in their surroundings since as early as 7000 BC. As with every innovation for humankind, we’ve grown and expanded our use of these scents and our means of spreading them. The modern, aerosol can of air freshener first hit the shelves in 1948. The car fresheners as we know them were first developed in 1952 by Canadian chemist, Julius Sämann. He invented the Little Trees car air freshener and the product was so well-designed and so useful that its design has barely changed in 60 years.
One day, while discussing the downsides of the job with his local milkman, Sämann got an idea that would solve the problem of less-than-desirable smells trapped in a vehicle.
Sämann went to work extracting oils from pine trees in the hopes of finding a way to cover up and clear out nasty smells, like rotting milk, trapped in vehicles.
How Did It Get So Popular?
As they say, timing is everything and boy did Sämann have good timing. His invention hit the market in the early ’50s, just when a large chunk of our nation was starting to embrace car ownership and discovering the need for this product as odors would build up quickly. It didn’t take long before you could see a Little Trees air freshener hanging from every rear-view mirror.
Today, we have myriad options for air fresheners to keep our vehicles smelling nice and yet, you can still see Little Trees in cars all over the nation. It’s comforting to know that in the ever-changing car industry, something so brilliant and so simple could stay the same.
While air fresheners are great, they don’t get rid of the smell, they simply cover it up.
